At Coronet, Collette and 'Sandro's skinny puppy, Jess, was wearing a little padded jacket that looked like a gambezon. Made me think of this link that popped up on LJ last week. Armour for your Cat.

The Kyrie and the Rounds at the Crosston bardic both sounded lovely. I was too far away to catch much of the other singing.

I've been talking to LearnTeach, and we'd like to host a 14th century cook's cook-over-fire playdate at Mists Fall Coronet (Ed Levine Park, October 16th-18th). This will be in conjunction with the 14th Century Salon suggested by the fabulous CallistoToni.

So what's cooking in the 14th Century? Just on the web there's English translations of these four cookbooks:
*) The Forme of Cury, English 1390: http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/foc/
*) Le Viandier de Taillevent, French http://www.telusplanet.net/public/prescotj/data/viandier/viandier1.html
*) Ein Buch von guter Spise, German http://cs-people.bu.edu/akatlas/Buch/recipes.html
*) Le Ménagier de Paris, French (cooking sections only) http://www.daviddfriedman.com/Medieval/Cookbooks/Menagier/Menagier.html#Beginning

Right now we haven't decided on which recipes we're going to try, so if you have a favorite please let me know.

If you don't like cooking, feel free to bring a story from Chaucer or the Decameron to read to the cooks.

regards,
Crystal of the Westermark

ETA: I was focused on web sources and neglected to mention Book of Sent Sovi: Medieval Recipes from Catalonia avaliable from http://www.poisonpenpress.com/cookery.html.

There's going to be some demonstration dances done at Collegium Occidentalis on April 25th.

If you would like to be part of the demo, please leave a comment and I'll forward the info to Vyncent who's doing the actual organization. The proposed demonstration dances are Fiamma d'Amore, Amoroso, Bizzaria d'Amore, Gracca Amoroso, Contrapasso, and either Fain I Would or Stingo.

The dance demonstration will take place during dinner, and there will be dancing for everyone afterwards.

Musicians are also welcome. Again, please leave a comment and I'll forward it to Geoffery Matthias who is organizing the musicians.

edited to add: Not to frighten anyone away, but this is performance dance. Just you and your partner in front of an audience (who might just be talking and eating dinner and paying no attention whatsoever).

You can give all the helpful diagrams in the world to the site owners but odds are greater then 50% you won't get what you want when you walk in Saturday morning. But the good news is the janitor is usually less crazy than the owner.
Sometimes, when you plan for 60, based on the numbers for the past three years, you'll get 120 (even in bad weather!).
Important lessons:
If you want your event to be on time, make sure the heralds are on your side. Fear or bribery, they both work. If you want your classes to be on time, make sure they start on time, and if there's no clock in the hall, give the instructors 10-minute warnings.
[livejournal.com profile] learnteach will leap on a grenade for a good cause. ThankyouThankyouThankyou.
When a pretty girl shows up to run gate, check with your exchequer and just say yes.
Plans might go to hell in a handbasket, but the event can still be fabulous. When teling a story, the key to a happy ending is knowing when to stop.
